Viscaria (preview)

I wasn't sure what pushed me to take the next train ride to the little town of Viscaria with my luggage in tow. To be honest, the town gave me the chills. Right when I stepped out of the train station, my boots landing on the rubble underneath me, that's when I felt it.

My Mystery novel for the Watty Awards 2014 featuring BYAM's sweetheart, Aggie Collins!

This story was inspired right after I watched the Summer Premiere of Pretty Little Liars as well as the preview for Ravenswood. I really want to create something dark and mysterious for a change so I decided to use Aggie for my main female character. Instead of casting her in the humor/romance genre, I steered her towards Mystery. So good luck to me!

Thanks for reading!

PROLOGUE

Los Angeles, CA

Hera and Vera Daniels drove up to the bank one Tuesday afternoon after getting off from school. Vera puts the little yellow Volkswagen in park and took her glasses off to glare at her twin sister.

"I'm sorry, okay," Hera muttered. "I just really hate going to the Bank." She took a deep breath and closed her eyes.

"You are so weird," Vera shook her head, squinting her heavily lined eyes at her sister. "Sometimes I get the feeling you aren't actually my sister."

After a moment she opened the car door. Hera made a face as they walked up the steps of the large bank. She opens the door to let Vera in before she did. Hera was against her sister's idea of going to the bank that day since she had this weird feeling that something was about to happen. She was never wrong when it comes to her feelings.

Vera had dubbed her as the 'Freak of the Daniels clan'.

"You know, you gotta stop watching a lot of those reality TV cop shows," Vera confidently flips her dark brown curls over her shoulder. "Oh, crud." Her jaw dropped at the sight of the people at the queuing line. Hera tugged on her twin's arm.

"Let's just head back home." Hera said, still tugging on her sister's arm. Vera shook her arm off and pulled out her cell phone. She starts to pace back and forth waiting for someone to answer. Hera looked around the bank. Her heartbeat was going a million times a minute. She took deep breath to help herself relax. It was just a normal busy day at the bank, as always. Vera tugged on her arm as they walked up to the side near the teller's counters.

It's only a panic attack. She thought.

What could go wrong, right?

She paused her nervous rambling and went ahead and took a breath.

"EVERYBODY ON THE FLOOR! NOW!" A guy with a black ski mask had his hand up in the air with a gun. Everybody immediately dropped to the floors while others scrambled to all corners of the bank. Hera and Vera nervously skulked behind a table. A lot of people started to cry and others started praying. Two of the guys went to the tellers and slipped a canvass bag over the counter. There was a tall guy nearby who was guarding the exit doors. He also had a black ski mask on.

The guy who was the only one constantly shouting in a deep loud voice commands the teller and she immediately does what he says completely filling the bag with cash. Hera and Vera were just a few steps from the guy with the black ski mask. They watched in horror as the whole situation unfolded in front of their eyes.

After that he motioned all of the other masked guys to the exit door. Every one was quiet except one of the security guards suddenly lifted a gun from his holster and pointed it directly at the masked guy.

"PUT THE FUCKING GUN DOWN!" He quickly said, firing the gun up in the air with a loud bang, debris from the ceiling fell and and the security guard automatically dropped his gun down on the floor and held both his hands high above his head.

"LET'S MOVE!" One of the guys grabbed Hera by the shoulder securing an arm around her neck locking her in place. Vera screamed. They quickly moved towards the back exit door dragging Hera alongside with them, a gloved hand over her mouth. She tried to scream and squirm her way out but the guy holding her was too strong.

I am dead.

I am so dead.

The words just went on repeatedly in her mind.

They can hear the cop sirens by now and she was quickly thrown on the ground, scraping most of her bare arm as they all scrambled towards a Black Chevrolet Camaro with pure black tinted windows parked at the back alley of the bank.

Everything just went a little too fast. Everything was a blur. How many guys were there? Four? Five? She couldn't even remember the license plate on the car.

Hera's heart felt like it wanted to jump out of her chest. She has never been this scared in her entire life. After what had happened that day, she started to have panic attacks. She started to have dreams because of everything that she experienced that fateful day at the bank.

And for that, her parents decided on one thing.

They were going to move out of Los Angeles.

Adrian Stanwood played by Wade Poezyn (our model friend http://fuckyeahwadepoezyn.tumblr.com). We'll learn more about him along the way.

CHAPTER 1

"Hey, four eyes! You dropped your book!" shouted Kellan as he picked the book up from the floor where almost everyone had stepped on it already. Red headed Marga Del Rio came running towards him but as soon as she was about to get the book from his hands, Kellan lifted his hand and threw to it to Dylan.

"Give it back, Kellan!" cried Marga. The book was passed on to Chester and finally to Errol. I stood nearby the boys as I saw the horrific sight. My stomach churned as they passed the book all around making Marga run around like a fool. The book finally landed on Kellan’s hands.

Meanwhile, I feel my temperature rising, the back of my neck burning as if it’s against an open flame. I strode over to punch Kellan in the arm just because I couldn't bear the sight anymore. He was laughing semi-hysterically

He massaged his arm through his thick black leather jacket. "Ow, that hurt."

I glared at him and folded my arms across my chest. "Give it back, Kellan. NOW."

"Alright, geez." Kellan deflates. He tossed the book back to Marga but she didn't catch it right away so it dropped to the floor once again leaving the boys in laughter. I quickly crouched down to reach for the book and handed it to Marga.

"Here you go."

"Thanks," she blushed without even looking at me taking the book from my hands and sauntered away, clutching a handful of books to her chest.

Marga, or as she was called by the cheer brats and the untouchables, four eyed metal mouth Marga, also known as a social reject and is one of Monte Carlo's best students. she had a perfect grade point average, president of the drama club and I wasn't really friends with her but she was always on top of those being bullied by 'the untouchables.' it has been six months since we moved to San Andreas, California from Los Angeles and so far I was already liking Monte Carlo. Leaving LA for my traumatic past was something I really wanted to forget and start anew.

When we first moved to San Andreas, Kellan was the very first person to approach me on my first day of school. Vera had the hots for him since day one but even though she was the hottest twin, Kellan had the eyes for me.

Yeah, he literally swept me off my feet on my very first day. Everything about him spelled trouble and my mom warned me about boys like him. She said something about the seven B's.

Books before boys because boys brings babies.

According to her, she saw this on Facebook. I should live by that rule. I actually laughed at my mom. She shouldn't worry about me since it would take a lot for a boy to get me to bed.

Kellan Sedaris was our school's bad boy. He was a trouble maker. Despite of being one, he still carried the status of being one of Monte Carlo's IT boys. No matter what awful things he did he still managed to be the captain of the football team, thanks to Chester Corwin’s dad who's the team's football's coach.

He's clearly a jerk to the highest power and up to now I still don't know what I ever saw in him.

"Why'd you hit me, babe?" Kellan quickly wrapped his arms around my waist and kissed my neck. I pushed him back gently and scoffed at him. "What?"

"Because you're such a jerk, Kellan," I pointed out. All the other guys just leaned on their lockers pretending not to hear us. "I felt so bad for Marga."

"So?" he snorted. "It was just a joke, come on."

I just shook my head. He draped his arm around my shoulder as we all head out the parking lot.

~§§§~

"I'm gonna get more popcorn," I grabbed the large plastic bowl from the coffee table and left the guys in the living room who were watching a football game that night. "Want to help me out, Kellan?"

Kellan seemed like he didn't hear me but continued to shout at the TV with the other guys.

"Ok, I guess that's a no then." I muttered.

I opened the pantry to grab another packet of buttered popcorn. As I turned around, I saw Adrian leaning on the island counter with both hands in his pocket. He had a fitted black shirt on and faded jeans. His dark brown hair was a bit messy but that only made him hotter.

Adrian Stanwood.

The Alpha male and Quarterback of Monte Carlo's football team. He's actually my boyfriend's best friend—and not to mention—the city mayor's only son.

Just like Kellan, he, too was a trouble maker.

"Shit, you scared me!" I rolled my eyes at Adrian as he let out a small laugh.

"Sorry," he scratched behind his ear, his blue eyes twinkling. "You said you wanted help, so here I am."

"I asked Kellan, not you."

"Well, he obviously doesn't care at the moment."

I nodded. Yeah, lately I noticed Kellan wasn't being himself. We would just go out and hang out by the Chill Palace every time they didn't have football practice. When someone calls, he usually takes it outside, away from where I can't hear him talking. I'm not like other girls where I look though their little black book, snoop into their bedrooms or their cell phones.

They say what you don't know won't hurt you.

Yes, okay, I must admit—I’m actually pretty bummed NOT knowing what is happening to my boyfriend. Watching Kellan's behavior for the past few weeks was eating me alive but I shrugged it off anyway.

"He's probably just tired, that's all." I whispered, placing the bag of popcorn inside the microwave. Adrian continued to stand there and stare at me with a little smirk on his tanned face. The silence between us was a little awkward. All you could hear were the boys screaming and shouting on the other side of the room.

"You're such a martyr." he finally conceded.

My eyebrows furrowed. "I'm sorry, what?"

"You're a martyr," he repeated. "I don't understand why you're still with him." he walks closer to me and takes my left hand. He slowly pulls up the sleeve of my sweater and touches the small black and blue bruise on my wrist that resembles an ink stain embedded on my skin. I felt sparks ignite as soon as his skin made contact with mine. I quickly pulled the sleeve down, Adrian leaned back on the counter island.

I stared at him incredulously.

"That's not what you think, Adrian," I said, like there wasn't anything wrong at all. "I hit my hand in the shower door, that's all."

He raised an eyebrow at me. "Shower door, huh?"

"Yo, babe—where’s the popcorn?!" Kellan shouted before I could even answer.

I grabbed the popcorn and poured it all in a bowl. I could still feel Adrian's gaze burning through me. Before I continue my way out, I stopped and motioned at the rest of the canned soda on the counter.

"Can you please grab those cans for me?" I simply said. He snaps back from his reverie as soon as he heard me.

"Sorry." He mumbled, immediately grabbing the cans off the counter.

For some reason, Kellan wasn't the only one acting weird around me lately.

And I don't think I feel good about it at all.

Picture Me!

Some love them, some don't.

Let's face it, character pics aren't the greatest. They usually ruin the perfect images etched in our mind. When we pick up a book, we somehow manage to mold a picture everytime we meet a character. Same with movies, when we see the main male character being introduced in the trailer, you'd be like 'Wait, that's (insert hot guy character here)? @$&@ ! He's supposed to be HAWT!"

I remember back in booksie, when I first started I didn't know why people were so crazy over character pictures, so I actually did it for fun as well right until I got a few messages saying they don't agree with my choices (and they start suggesting celebs). Even when I first started posting on Wattpad, one girl said I needed to remove my character list because that's not how she imagined them. I removed them a few hours later because I gave it some thought. Then a few weeks later, I brought them back. I figured, hey - this is my story, I can do whatever I please.

I respect people's opinions since everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but they also need to respect the author for doing that. Some people are very rude when it comes to stating their opinions. I mean, come on! If you hate it so much, then I suggest you go somewhere else. Plain simple.

When I read a book and see character pictures after, believe it or not, those original images in my head remains the same. Somehow, I can control it.

Character pictures are fun. It's nice to pick your own little cast, almost like making your own movie, you know? So if you hate character pics, then don't look at the list. But then again, it's really hard not to.

Okay, let's move on to picking the characters. I admit I'm guilty for doing this but I just want to point it out (well, it was already pointed out plenty of times in the past) how every book seem to have such beautiful characters. Believe me, I cringe whenever I do that with my characters. For me, I think they're okay as long as they have flaws. Because that's how it is in real life. People have flaws. Lots and lots of flaws. They may be beautiful but they're not as perfect as you imagined them to be.

Hmmm.... what else?

Oh yeah, like when you're a new writer for example and you choose celebs that looks waaaaaay older than your average seventeen year old. I cringe when I think of that because I'm guilty of that, too. But I try my best to pick the best ones that fit the characters in my mind.

Like some stories back in booksie, whenever I come across a character sheet, I see the main male character who's about 16 years old with a body builder's frame! Bulging muscles with popping veins all over! I'm like OMG, seriously? I don't think I've seen one 16 year old that looks like that.

They're 16, NOT 30!

Sorry, I'm just pointing it out. It's just so unrealistic you know?

Whenever I'm in my car, waiting for my son to come out of his class, I always look at the high school kids that passes by. Sure, some of them can look like Abercrombie models but majority of them are just skinny as toothpicks with their sagging pants and skateboards.

So when it comes to picking your cast, I think it's alright to pick an image of a guy/girl that looks a little over their age just as long as they don't look like bodybuilders (those really huge ones) please, don't even go there. Remember, It's ok to pick a character with a little muscle. Just ... not too much muscle.

Speaking of too much. People sometimes overdo it. In the past, I've seen newbies (even populars) choose the same popular celebrities to portray their MMC/MFC's. I admit, I'm guilty of this one. There's a huge selection of people to choose from in Hollywood. Even when it comes to models. It gets boring later on. I admit, I get so excited whenever I see that certain celeb playing the part, but after awhile when I see the same celeb playing the lead in every book I see, I lose interest.

It's best to pick an unknown cast, especially for the lead characters. But it's also advisable to mix them up, popular or not. It's all up to you. Have fun choosing your characters. Also Keep in mind, that just because you chose a hot celebrity as your main character doesn't mean you'll get popular overnight. Choosing popular celebs for your cast doesn't guarantee an overnight success. It still grinds down to having a great well written story.
